NBA MVP Trophy to be renamed MVL Trophy: Most Valuable LeBron
- Updated: May 8, 2013

After LeBron James won his 4th MVP in 5 years with all but one vote (how DARE that guy vote for the guy that dragged a bunch of 60 year olds to a division title instead of the best player on a stacked team) the NBA has decided to avoid any future controversy, the trophy will now by known as the MVL Trophy: Most Valuable LeBron. That way there’s no question over who you’re supposed to vote for.
David Stern on the trophy name-change: “I’m going to be retiring, so to ensure my legacy remains intact I want LeBron winning every MVP trophy for the rest of time. Even after he’s dead. This decision allows that to be possible.” Well at least he’s not hiding who he is cheering for anymore. That’s nice of him. Now the question is how does he make sure the Heat win every title? That’s a challenge he’ll have to face before leaving office.
What does LeBron think of all this? LeBron on the trophy name-change: “I’d like to thank my teammates, the fans, coaches, the refs, and especially David Stern. It’s one thing to win a bunch of MVPs, it’s another to have the trophy named after you. Sorry Cleveland, but this would’ve never happened there. Now you see why I left. I’m trying to become the greatest of all time. Having the MVP trophy named for me is a good start.”
Now if someone votes for Carmelo Anthony for Most Valuable LeBron, the outrage will be justified. Knowing the people that cover the NBA, there’s a good chance that could still happen anyway. Stern ought to consider hiring nothing but Miami Heat beat writers to vote for all the awards. That would be one way to ensure he gets the results he wants. You don’t want to anger David Stern. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
